Hagenau Religious Discussion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At the Hagenau Religious Discussion in 1540, princes and theologians met in Hagenau , Alsace , to negotiate the terms of a future religious discourse between Protestants and Catholics .

In 1539, in the so-called Frankfurt decency, the status quo between Protestant and Catholic imperial estates was extended and it was agreed that a religious discussion should be held. The Hagenau Religious Discussion, which took place from June 28th to July 28th, 1540, threatened to fail due to the hardening of confessional positions because of procedural issues. The aim of reaching an agreement on key doctrinal issues was linked to the efforts made by the Augsburg Reichstag in 1530 to achieve understanding . The conversation was led by Charles V's brother , King Ferdinand I. The papal nuncio Giovanni Morone was also present.

Mainly the prerequisites and procedural questions of a future religious discussion were discussed. No agreement was reached on the central question of the extent to which the Reformation writing principle would be accepted by the Catholic side as a standard of interpretation. It was therefore decided to continue the preliminary negotiations and a substantive discussion , which should start from the Confessio Augustana .
