View of the rebuilt walls

The walls of the fortress form an irregular square. The facility can be entered through gates in the north and south of the fortress. There is a tower at the southwest corner of the fortress wall. Inside the wall are the ruins of the Church of S. Minas and a chapel as well as the foundations of several buildings.

history

Halidzor was founded as a nunnery in the 17th century. The complex is therefore also known as Halidzor Monastery. Due to its location, the fortress was considered impregnable. The Armenian freedom fighter Davit Bek organized the resistance against the Ottoman Empire from here in the early 18th century . In 1723 he withdrew to the fortress with 300 volunteers and withstood a siege by a 70,000-strong Ottoman army for seven days. This was made possible by a secret, approximately 500 meter long tunnel that led to the river and thus secured the water supply for the trapped. Because the situation seemed hopeless because of a lack of food supplies, Bek sent his men to a final battle against the Turks. The surprise attack succeeded, the Turks withdrew. In 1728 Bek died of illness at the fortress and was probably buried there in the cemetery in front of the castle. Shortly afterwards, the Ottoman army captured Halidzor.
