Harmonics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In ancient Greek philosophy , the harmonists were a group of thinkers who, in contrast to the canons, rejected an acoustic-physical foundation of music theory, especially a theory based on string measurements on the canon (monochord) . By contrast, they based their music theory solely on listening experience. The harmonists include Aristoxenus and the later Aristoxeneer . In the latter, there is often a rejection of the mathematical justification of music theory, but not in Aristoxenus himself, who called for a strict mathematical justification on perception with the ear.
