House OBU

The residential and studio building OBU was a residential building in Cologne ( Germany ).

The building, located in Cologne's villa suburb of Cologne-Hahnwald , was built in 1976-82 according to plans by the architect Erwin H. Zander as his own residential and studio building.

The experimental building, consisting of eight lightweight wooden domes overgrown with ivy and wine, was built inexpensively in a handmade shell construction, which explains the long construction period. In the brick basement there was a service area with dressing rooms and bathrooms, above that there were living, sleeping and working areas with a high living hall in the center of the building, which was kept free from fixtures and which was open to the garden. Inside and outside, an installation designed by Dani Karavan made of water basins and walkways connected the individual domes.

The building was regarded as a masterpiece of experimental, postmodern and archaic architecture that was close to nature and remained without successors in Germany.

The house was demolished in autumn 2011.
