House of the Gladiators

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house of the gladiators (also gladiator barracks , Italian Casa dei Gladiatori or Caserma dei Gladiatori ) (V 5, 3) is located in Pompeii . The house was built in the first century BC. Built as a private home. It consists of a large peristyle with rooms on the north and east sides. The peristyle is adorned with eight columns on the long sides and four on the short sides. There is an entrance on the east side of the house. Another entrance is on the south side in an extension of the house that extends to the street. Next to this extension there is a small house, which is completely surrounded by the house of the gladiators in the north and west, in the east and south it borders on a road crossing.

After a renovation phase, the gladiators' house was used as a training area for gladiators . Barriers decorated with mythological landscapes and hunting scenes were erected between the columns in the peristyle. Its use as a gladiator exercise area results primarily from the numerous graffiti that the gladiators left behind in the building. The triclinium in the back of the house is painted with fine paintings in the third style .
