The Lieler Church

The Church of the Holy Cross ( Sainte-Croix , also: Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix ) is a Roman Catholic church in Lieler, a district of Clervaux in Luxembourg . The church is registered as a Luxembourg monument national.

history

Lieler was mentioned in the 12th century in connection with the imperial abbey of Echternach and was a subsidiary of Weiswampach until its own parish was established in 1807 .

The exterior of the church is dominated by the massive choir tower from the 14th century. The simple nave was built in 1850 and replaced a new building from 1770 that was already in disrepair after 80 years. In the medieval choir, frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries have been preserved, depicting the symbols of the evangelists, the apostles and the Last Judgment.
