Local history museum Varel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vareler Heimatmuseum has been located on the Neumarkt, which was laid out in 1755, since 1954 .

The building in which the museum is housed is an earlier half-timbered house , built around 1677 , which received its current facade at the beginning of the 19th century. The first equipment of the museum was donated mainly by the citizens. Since 1971 the lower rooms of the museum with the restaurant "Schienfatt" have been managed. In the neighboring buildings at Neumarktplatz 3a and 5 there are large exhibition rooms with exhibits from the last 300 years of Varel history as well as the home and city archives.

A broad spectrum of Varel's history can be traced in the museum, from prehistory to finds from the Chaukenzeit and pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Souvenirs from the former German colonies of Varelern, which belonged to the imperial navy, can also be seen here. A wide variety of objects and documents from the last centuries, especially from the reign of the Count families von Aldenburg and von Bentinck , are present in several exhibition rooms . A section is also dedicated to the poet Georg Ruseler , who was born near Varel in 1877 . Most of the works by regional artists are shown in the foyer. Extensions such as a lecture room, Lothar Meyer memorial room, a pewter room (since Varel was a stronghold of the pewter foundry), a watchmaker's workshop, a historic children's room, etc. a. are in planning.
