Herbert Warren Ladd (born October 15, 1843 in New Bedford , Massachusetts , † November 29, 1913 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1889 to 1890 and between 1891 and 1892 .

Early years

After finishing school, Ladd sold haberdashery for some time before starting to work for the New Bedford Mercury newspaper. Ladd took part in the Civil War as a soldier with various units from Rhode Island. Then he went back into the haberdashery business, which he now ran in Boston . After returning to Rhode Island, he founded the HW Ladd Company .

Political rise and governor of Rhode Island

Herbert Ladd was a member of the Republican Party . He was Vice President of the Trade Committee and President of the Society for the Prevention of Violence against Children. In 1889, Ladd ran for governor of Rhode Island. Since none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority, the legislature had to determine the new governor. This decided in favor of Ladd, who was able to officiate as governor between May 28, 1889 and May 27, 1890. In 1890 he was defeated while trying to be re-elected to John Davis . In 1891 he was re-elected governor for one year by the legislature. His second term began on May 26, 1891, ended on May 31, 1892 and was uneventful.

At the end of his term of office, Ladd returned to his private affairs. He died in November 1913. He had four children with his wife, Emma F. Burrows.
