The mansion with two stone guards is located in Westerstede - Burgforde , Ammerland , and is a work of art in public space that was designed by Norbert Marten and Christel Mandos-Feldmann . The execution was carried out by Norbert Marten. The manor house was inaugurated in May 2000 and was a project of the Ammerland Art Trail, initiated by Ingeborg Posega.

Location

The manor with two stone guards is located within the former castle complex Wittenheimer Burgplatz , which was first mentioned in 1439 and demolished at the end of the 18th century. Finds from excavations can be found in the State Museum for Nature and Man in Oldenburg .

The group of sculptures is reminiscent of the history of the castle as a mansion and castle mansion and, on the other hand, questions the way the farmers of the time dealt with historical cultural assets . The site is a listed building .

Concept and execution

Through the conception, Norbert Marten and Christel Mandos-Feldmann shed light on parts of the history of the Burgplatz, questioned zeitgeist mistakes in history, corrected them in the present and preserves cultural values for the future as a place for a "think time!" In nature:

  • The stolen stones from the castle are symbolically returned to the Burgplatz forest park as "Burgmannslehngut":

An originally 8 t travertine has been transformed into a 2.50 m high sculpture by the sculptor Norbert Marten. A male figure seated on a kind of throne resides in the square. However, only the legs and stomach are visible. The upper body and head are hidden in a stone mass. The legs form armrests for all those who want to sit there at a height of 1.20 to lean against the "man" on Burgplatz. The view from there follows the avenue through which one reaches the castle square, which is protected by the ramparts and the two moats.

  • A split, towering boulder from the region, partly sanded and partly figured, takes on the function of guardian. Synonymous, they guard cultural values, in particular the cultural memory of this castle square as the "mansion" of a bygone era:

Burgmannslehngut and manor have fallen victim to the past in the castle history of the place; the high cultural value was not recognized in a region with rural and strongly hierarchical structures. Therefore it seemed important for this work of art in public space, on this special historical place, to post “watchmen” as warning and security of this castle square at the “entrance of the castle square”. They refer to a respectful handling of cultural assets, also for present and future events.

Art for everyone

In the art in public space by Norbert Marten and Christel Mandos-Feldmann, historical backgrounds represent a socio-political platform to keep cultural memories alive, to promote cultural education, to pass on new forms of communication through and with art. Therefore, the concept of the Westersted work of art "" Manor House "with two stone guards" also included a presentation of the historical finds and a castle square festival. The residents of Westerstede were invited to document and present preserved parts of the castle. To mark the inauguration, the “Herrensitzfest” took place on the old Burgplatz in Westerstede-Burgforde in May 2000 with a large number of citizens.

A constant questioning of the Burgplatz and thus a questioning of political conditions and cultural developments in and around Westerstede was the intended goal of the concept of Norbert Marten and Christel Mandos-Feldmann for the “manor”, also for the future.
