Hide Go Seek is Roger Chapman's fourteenth studio album . It was released as a blues rock double album under the German label Hypertension on May 8th, 2009. The special thing about this album is the high quality of the previously unreleased titles and alternative versions of previously published songs from his 30-year solo career.
Music genre
This double album shows a retro perspective of Chapman's creative period since 1979 with unreleased songs and is therefore a typical stylistic mix of R&B from blues rock to soul and country. Because of the wide variety of production methods over the past three decades, the sound was adjusted by Jim Cregan's song production. Therefore the album sounds almost like a piece and like from times when Chapman still had his voluminous rock voice. On his last release, One More Time Of Peace, it was already clear how Chapman's voice had lost strength under the years of stress on his tours, excessive drinking after concerts (“… going to drink, we're terrible) and a violent larynx. For this reason he thought about an end to his music career in 2009, which he finally discarded and significantly reduced his performances.
According to Chapman, he spent a lot of time setting the order of the songs on Hide Go Seek . It almost drove him crazy until he was stopped by the production company.
"Then of course came the difficult job - the running order. … A marathon trying to put 28 tracks in order, drove me mad. Played the real thing yesterday & still want to change it! The record company made me stop `cos I was going on & on - as is my want of course." [Chapman, May 7, 2009] "Then of course came the difficult job - determining the order. ... the marathon, the 28 songs tidying up drove me crazy. If it was a good decision yesterday, I wanted to change it again! The record company made me quit because I just couldn't find an end - as it was of course my wish. [Eng .: Chapman, 7. May 2009]
History of origin
In mid-2008 Chapman had the idea of producing a CD with unreleased song “pearls” and won over his record company with a few selected songs. Together with his former family bandmate Jim Cregan, he produced the double album. 20 of the 28 tracks were previously unreleased and 8 tracks were alternative versions of previously released songs.
Chapman explained in an interview that he found the compilation of the CD like finding or "tidying up things" (orig. "... just cleaning up stuff"). Hence the CD title Hide Go Seek , in German something like "Versteckspiel" or "Versteckt go 'Suche". Many recordings were unfinished, with rough transitions, without a real beginning or end. Most of the songs with Jim Cregan as co-writer were recorded in Los Angeles in the 1990s. They were originally intended for an album called Family Theme . However, this project could not be implemented. Therefore, some songs for the albums Kiss My Soul (1996, Beautiful Dreamers ) and A Turn Unstoned? (1998, Glory Ride , Vapor Trails ). The song Naked Hearts was originally composed for a film about Loch Ness, but was discarded. "We wrote him over the phone back then, I was humming, Jim wrote," says Chapman. “Then he recorded the back track in his LA studio and sent it to me to record the vocals in London while Jim [in Los Angles] recorded the demos Wicked B and Bring me Your Love . Otherwise, the double album contains unreleased tracks from Walking The Cat and sessions that go back to his first album Chappo . As with all of his releases, this album was promoted by a concert tour (Hide-Go-Seek Tour).
