The Hierlatzkalk is a lithostratigraphic formation in the Northern Limestone Alps . The formation is found in the higher, southern parts of the Northern Limestone Alps. The Hierlatzkalk is named after the mountain group of the Hirlatzwand and the front, middle and rear Hirlatz (today's spelling) near Hallstatt . The type locality in this summit group is actually on the southern slope of the Feuerkogel.

genesis

In principle, the Hierlatz limestone originated in the Lower Jurassic , although the sedimentation of this type of limestone - for example on the Mitterwand - can continue into the Middle Jurassic . The Hierlatzkalk forms a thin, patchy cover on the lagoon Dachstein Limestone and is mainly found in the form of crevice fillings. The Hierlatzkalk documents the sinking of the seabed to ever greater depths. This red limestone formed on submarine high zones (thresholds), where currents only allowed thin sediment accumulations.

Hierlatzkalk is particularly characterized by its abundance of round or pentagonal crinoid fragments, the white color of which stands out from the red lime matrix. It was temporarily dismantled as a decorative stone under the name Fludergrabenmarmor .
