Heaven or Hell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heaven or / and Hell ( HoH for short , regionally also called pepper and salt ) is a finger game that is very popular with children. It is folded from a square sheet of paper and then painted in the colors blue (for heaven) and red (for hell) so that when you open it - which is possible via two axes - you either go into "heaven" or into the "hell" looks. HoH games are especially popular in kindergartens as handicrafts.

This folding game should not be confused with the jumping game Heaven and Hell of the same name .

Other forms of the game are known in the Far East (Japan, North and South Korea).

In the German-speaking part of Switzerland, this finger game, which is still popular, is known as "Schnipp-Schnapp" and the way it is played differs a little from the classic heaven or hell variant described here.

Folding technique
Folding instructions

A square sheet of paper serves as the basis. The corners of the paper are then folded up to the middle of the sheet. Then you turn the sheet over so that the side with the corners folded towards the middle is facing down. Now repeat the process and fold (the current) corners towards the middle again. Then you fold the sheet once along the x-axis. Then you fold it back again (only the last step) and fold the whole thing again, but this time around the y-axis. Now the “finger chambers” have formed, which now only need to be “bulged”. To do this, you drive your thumb, index, middle and ring finger into one of these “finger chambers”.

Painting

You put the Heaven or Hell game together and turn it over to the side on which the diagonal fold lines are. These diagonals divide the game of heaven or hell into four isosceles triangles. Now you have to paint the triangles that are opposite each other the same way. The colors used are usually blue and red. Finally, you slide your fingers back into the “finger chambers” and the heaven or hell game is finished. The quality depends on the accuracy of folding.

Game idea

If you have a finished heaven or hell game at hand, you need a partner to play. One of the two game participants must now use the heaven or hell game and close it to the middle. Then the finger game has to be rotated until neither player knows where heaven and where hell is. The one without HoH now has to guess whether the other “goes” to heaven or hell. Then the one with HoH opens the same either via the x-axis or the y-axis. If the resulting "throat" is blue, the player goes to heaven, but if he is red, he goes to hell.

In the variant of German-speaking Switzerland described under “ Distribution ”, the player is asked to name any number. The scope of the numbers can also be restricted. The snap-snap is now opened according to the number mentioned, alternating once along the x and once along the y axis. Once the specified number has been reached, the player is asked to select one of the colored dots previously painted on the visible inner surface. This area is then folded over and a slogan previously written down by the manufacturer of the Schnipp-Schnapps appears. This then has to be endured fatefully.
