Back stairs
The expression back stairs denotes the invisible ascent of the servants to the work rooms in contrast to the visible front stairs of the bourgeois residential building . The back stairs soon became proverbial for a certain form of rumor ( back stairs gossip ) by officious informers, as well as for the hidden access of lovers and lovers. Colportage novels sold to servants via the back stairs by traveling dealers were soon given the nickname back stairs novel .
The philosopher Wilhelm Weischedel used the picture in his book title " The Philosophical Back Staircase " to pave the way for an unfamiliar "personal" access to important philosophers: You come as you are and you present yourself as you are. And yet the back stairs lead to the same destination as the front stairs: to the people who live upstairs.
