Hipparcheion
The Hipparcheion (ancient Greek ἱππαρχείον) was the headquarters of the military cavalry of the Athens polis . It probably existed from the 6th or 5th century BC to the 2nd century BC. In the area northwest of the ancient agora , documents, in particular labeled lead tablets with sample lists from riders ( Hippeis ) were found. This is one of the reasons why it is assumed that the Hipparcheion may have been there. However, it has not yet been localized archaeologically.
The Athenian cavalry was headed by two hipparchs who were elected annually. They were subordinate to the 10 Phylarchs, the leaders of the cavalry of the 10 Phylenes .
