The Hirth Hi-20 MoSe was a retractable motor glider in the 1930s.

technology

Wolf Hirth envisioned a self-launching motor glider for air hiking. To make things easier, the wings and tail unit were taken over from the standard Gö-4 . However, a new, slimmer tubular steel fuselage was built to accommodate the pilot and the engine. A new four-cylinder two-stroke engine with 25 hp was developed by W. Krautter. The engine propelled a 1.40 m two-bladed propeller in a pressure arrangement via a remote shaft with an angular gear. The reduction in the angular gear was 2.3: 1. The entire drive arrangement with motor and propeller mast was rotatably mounted and folded into the horizontal when retracted. The propeller was then in the rear part of the fuselage, while the engine came to lie behind the rear bulkhead of the cabin. Two flaps closed the back of the trunk. Two wheels were installed in tandem for self-start. The first flight took place in October 1941 in an aircraft tow. Motorized flights were still taking place, but the war prevented further development.
