As Historia Croylandensis refers to a number of bound documents, presumably from the 15th century, a fake history of the Benedictine abbey of Croyland , Lincolnshire contained, England.

The Historia Croylandensis contains a history of the Croyland Abbey that dates back to the 9th century. It also contains basic letters that should prove the basic rights of the monastery.

meaning

The forged work was created to win a land tenure lawsuit in 1413. Together with the basic letters, Croyland Abbey won the legal battle with these documents.

In research, the Historia Croylandensis has long been regarded as a source for the medieval way of life in England.

It was not until the 19th century that the work was recognized as a forgery. It was noticed that some monks were reported to have lived to be 140 years old. Furthermore, several had studied at Oxford, although the university had not in fact yet been established.

Lore

The original of the Historia Croylandensis has not survived. There are several traditions. The fragmentary "British Library (BL) Cotton MS Ortho B xiij" (15th century) and "BL Arundel 178" (16th century).
