The Historical Association for the City and Abbey of Essen e. V. is a history association that deals with the history of the city ​​of Essen and the Essen monastery . It was founded in 1880 and is one of the oldest historical societies in Germany. Today the association has 479 members (as of January 1, 2014). 1st chairman is Hans Schippmann, 2nd chairman and managing director Klaus Kaiser.

The association's collections form one of the foundations for the local history holdings of the Ruhr Museum , the city library and the city archive of Essen. He publishes the series Essener Posts - Contributions to the history of the city and monastery of Essen , which meanwhile comprises 132 volumes (the register for the first 25 volumes was written in 1912 by the canonist and canon law historian Franz Gescher). The complete collection is available in the Essen city library. The association is a member of the Essen History Initiatives Working Group .

The association also regularly offers excursions, guided tours and lectures. He supports the Stolpersteine project - which commemorates the expulsion and extermination of Jews, Gypsies, politically persecuted people, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and euthanasia victims under National Socialism.

On October 22, 2005, the Historical Association for the City and Monastery of Essen celebrated its 125th anniversary with a ceremony. As part of the anniversary program, the monument path, which is maintained by the historical association, was inaugurated.
