The first written mention of Hiyoshi Taisha goes back to Kojiki in the 8th century. In the Middle Ages , the shrine was influenced by the nearby Enryaku-ji temple , so some Buddhist ideas were introduced.
The shrine buildings were burned down by Oda Nobunaga in the destruction of Enryaku-ji in 1571 , but were rebuilt towards the end of the 16th century.
