Hoehn and Yahr scale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hoehn and Yahr scale is used to assess the severity of Parkinson's disease . It is easy to collect and widely used. Postural instability is used as a key factor in assessing the disability, other motor and non-motor factors are not relevant. The stage according to Hoehn and Yahr is part of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS).

The scale was published in Neurology in 1967 by Margaret M. Hoehn and Melvin D. Yahr .

Degree Hoehn and Yahr scale
I. Unilateral symptoms with no or only slight functional disability
II Bilateral symptoms, no postural instability
III Bilateral symptoms, minor to moderate disability with slight postural instability, still physically independent
IV Severe handicap, patient but able to stand and walk without help
V Tied to a wheelchair or bed without assistance
