Hotel New World

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New World Hotel was located in Singapore at the intersection of Serangoon Road and Owen Road. On March 15, 1986, the six-story hotel building collapsed due to a construction error. 50 people were trapped under the rubble. 17 could be saved, 33 perished.

Inferior building material and the nearby construction work on a subway tunnel could be ruled out as causes. A review of the plans showed that the responsible engineers had correctly calculated the weight of the interior fittings, building installations such as electricity and water and that of the people, but the weight of the building was omitted. Except for this devastating calculation error, the building was built using every trick in the book. The collapse of the building was inevitable.
