Howard Nemerov
Howard Stanley Nemerov (born February 29, 1920 in New York City , † July 5, 1991 in University City , Missouri ) was an American literary professor, poet and Pulitzer Prize winner of Russian-Jewish descent.
Life
Howard Nemerov was the only son of David Nemerov and his wife Gertrude Russek. His parents owned the Russeks fur and fashion department store on Fifth Avenue in New York. Nemerov's parents left the upbringing of their three children to the staff, and each child had their own nanny. He had two younger sisters: Diane (1923–1971), a well-known photographer , and Renée (* 1928), a successful sculptor and interior designer. Howard Nemerov studied at Harvard University , where he received his bachelor's degree . During the Second World War he served as a pilot , first in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later in the United States Army Air Forces with the rank of first lieutenant . Howard Nemerov married Margaret Russel on January 26, 1944, and they had a son, David Nemerov.
After the war he taught at various colleges and universities, including Hamilton College in Clinton , New York, Bennington College in Bennington , Brandeis University in Waltham and, most recently, Washington University in St. Louis . Howard Nemerov died of complications from cancer in University City and was buried in the family grave in New York City.
