Hugdietrich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugdietrich is the father of Wolfdietrich in the German heroic legend .

In version B of the Wolfdietrich epic, his story is expanded: He wins his royal daughter Hildeburg, who is locked up in a tower by her father Walgund, King of Salneck (in other traditions: Hiltgart), by disguising himself in women's clothes. As a playmate for the king's daughter, he is allowed to keep her company. A short time later the king's daughter becomes pregnant and gives birth to Wolfdietrich. This is abandoned, but then rescued from a wolf's nest by Hildburg's father and named Wolfdietrich. Finally there is a reconciliation with Hugdietrich.

Like the legend of Wolfdietrich, the story of Hugdietrich was part of the printed book of heroes and was therefore relatively well known up to the 16th century.
