ISO-IR-165

ISO-IR-165 is a 16-bit character encoding for Simplified Chinese and is mentioned in RFC 1922 , section 2.1. It is not ASCII compatible.

Each character is represented by byte pairs in the range 0x21-0x7E, which means that the coding can also be used in mail traffic. A total of 8,376 characters are encoded, 7,609 of which are Chinese characters. In addition to the Chinese characters, the character set also encodes Pinyin , Greek and Cyrillic script, frame drawing, Hiragana and Katakana as well as Zhuyin and various symbols.

The character set was implemented in ISO-2022-CN , but was never widely used.
