identi.ca is a microblogging - service and a social network similar to Twitter . identi.ca supports the open standard OStatus (formerly OpenMicroBlogging ) and is the reference implementation and most important platform for the free software StatusNet . Identi.ca has been using the pump.io software since July 2013 .

development

The platform was founded by Evan Prodromou, who had previously co-founded the travel wiki Wikitravel in particular . The service started on July 1, 2008. Within the first 24 hours, 8,000 users registered and 19,000 messages were sent. The milestone of one million messages was reached on November 4, 2008, the two millionth message was sent on January 27, 2009, and the third millionth on March 25, 2009. In January 2009, identi.ca received capital from the Montreal Start Up investment group , which typically invests between $ 120,000 and $ 320,000. In April 2009 identi.ca had 50,000 users. In March 2010 identi.ca had around 200,000 hits. In April 2010 one could assume over 150,000 registered users based on the consecutive numbering of the users.

With a share of almost a third, most of the identi.ca users are currently from Germany.

On March 30th, 2009 it was announced that identi.ca will probably be continued from May 2009 as a free service under the umbrella of the new free, paid microblogging service StatusNet . The operator remains "Control Yourself". StatusNet offers the hosting of microblogging services under a freely selectable subdomain . The “Creative Commons Attribution 3.0” license is also used by default for the paid offer; however, customers could choose a different license. So far, the change has not had any negative effects on identi.ca users. Even since StatusNet started operating, the identi.ca service has been operated under the StatusNet logo, but still under its own domain.

Free and open service

identi.ca saw itself as an open alternative to the well-known micro-blogging service Twitter . All notes published on identi.ca must be released under the Creative Commons license “Creative Commons Attribution 3.0”. However, by switching to pump.io, the similarity to Twitter has largely disappeared: pump.io has no hashtags and is not limited to 140 characters. The groups known from Status.net are also missing.
