The Ikaruga-dera ( Japanese 斑鳩 寺 ) is a temple of the Tendai direction of Buddhism in Taishi ( Hyōgo prefecture ).

history

This temple was laid out by Shōtoku in 598 with the support of Emperor Suiko as a branch temple of Hōryū-ji . He was based on the land division system Jōrisei ( 条 里 制 ). According to a plan drawn up in 1329, the temple area was marked in ten places with marker stones ( 牓 示 石 , Hōji-ishi ). Five of them could be verified, they are registered as historical traces of the prefecture. They are always rough stones of various sizes.

Originally the temple had a handsome classical "complex with seven buildings" ( 七 堂 伽藍 , Shichidō-garan ) and numerous monk's clauses , but the temple burned down in 1541 during the Akamatsu-Yamana disputes. The temple was gradually rebuilt until it was somewhat restored around 1565.
