Indeo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Indeo is a format for lossy compressed video data that was developed by Intel in 1992 and sold to Ligos in 2000 . The associated reference codec was one of the first codecs that allowed the playback of videos without hardware acceleration .

The format was popular for webcam software, games and CBT applications for a long time . Due to its proprietary license, no open source codec is currently available. Official decoders exist for Windows, Mac OS Classic (not X), and some other operating systems. Both Video-for-Windows versions and DirectShow versions of the codec exist for Windows .

Indeo version 5 (5.08 to 5.11) is preinstalled on all Windows versions from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP . In Windows XP SP1, the Indeo codec was not delivered pre-installed for the first time. However, since some games and applications have relied on this codec to be installed, Microsoft made a hotfix available relatively immediately to reinstall it. However, Microsoft deactivated Indeo at the end of 2009 for security reasons for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player .
