Independent Electoral Commission (South Africa)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The South African Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is their country's electoral commission . It was formed as part of the transitional constitution adopted in 1993. For the elections held in 1994 , the first after the apartheid period , five foreign members were installed alongside eleven domestic members. The commission then monitored this and all subsequent elections at national, provincial and local level.

In addition to conducting the elections and announcing the results, the IEC is also responsible for registering parties and administering state party funding.

The IEC is based in Pretoria and has offices in all of South Africa's provinces.
