Independent JPEG Group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Independent JPEG Group ( IJG ) is an informal organization that develops software for the JPEG standard. It was originally organized by Thomas G. (Tom) Lane and followed the spread of the JPEG standard and compatible software. After 11 years without a publication, it has recently been pursuing other, controversial objectives under the direction of Guido Vollbeding under the old name.

The most important product is the widespread free JPEG implementation libjpeg, first published in 1991 . It is one of the most important open source software packages for JPEG and has been a key to the standard's success. The JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF), the common file format for encapsulating individual JPEG still images, was also developed and established by the IJG or, more precisely, by Eric Hamilton at C-Cube Microsystems and was widely used on the web.
