Unsteadiness

The unsteadiness , technically also transience , stands for the property of a parameter not to follow a constant value over time. The opposite is called stationarity .

If a stochastic process is considered, two types of unsteadiness have to be distinguished: homogeneous unsteadiness and inhomogeneous unsteadiness. The homogeneous unsteadiness can be converted into a stationary time series by a suitable transformation of the time series (e.g. by forming differences).

The term transient comes from English, but is now also known in German. It is important in engineering, especially in hydraulic engineering, in flow calculations, in heat transport calculations, in various numerical calculations, etc.
