The Pierre Werner Institute (abbreviated IPW ) is a European cultural institute that aims to promote cultural diversity, intellectual exchange and debates in Europe.

history

The Pierre Werner Institute was founded in 2003 on the initiative of the French, German and Luxembourg governments as a not-for-profit company under Luxembourg law. It continues the work of the former Goethe Institute Luxembourg and the former Thomas Mann Library with a new objective. At the same time, it strives for cultural diversity, intellectual exchange and the debate of opinion in Europe, but also between Europe and its neighbors. Here the institute follows the tradition of the “Spirit of Colpach” , with a particular focus on the creation of European citizenship. According to the statutes from 2006, other member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area can join the trinational institute with a European vocation, if there is interest and if a cultural institute is already represented in Luxembourg.

Guiding principle

The Pierre Werner Institute is based in Luxembourg , one of its founding countries, for good reason . The location reflects the desire of the countries to create a basis for a network of cultural and intellectual exchange. This approach is intended to create a cultural Europe that stimulates national cultures to mutually enrich and benefit from one another. In this way, the institute becomes a meeting place and ties in with the long tradition of intellectual exchange that has characterized European culture in the past centuries.

organization

The Pierre Werner Institute is managed by an executive board supported by a scientific advisory board. It is financed by contributions from the member countries of the institute. The institute works with cultural institutions and other actors who promote intellectual dialogue. This happens both in Luxembourg, the “Greater Region”, and beyond.

activity

The institute organizes seminars, conferences, colloquiums and other cultural events, carries out interdisciplinary projects of European importance and issues printed, audiovisual and electronic publications. The “European Cultural Forum Luxembourg” is a focal point in the work of the institute in order to contribute to a multifaceted discussion of social problems and European issues.

Naming

The institute was named after the Luxembourg politician Pierre Werner (1913–2002), who throughout his life focused his political activities both as Prime Minister and as Minister of Finance and Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg towards the establishment of Europe. He put his main focus on the development of a common European currency and a common cultural policy.
