from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences ( IESBS ) is an English-language encyclopedia of the social and behavioral sciences in 26 volumes, the first edition of which was published in 2001 by Elsevier . It was edited by the sociologist Neil J. Smelser and the psychologist Paul Baltes .

The encyclopedia consists of around 4000 articles, which are divided into 39 "sections". The encyclopedia contains around 150 biographical articles. Volumes 25 and 26 are index volumes with name indices and an indexing of the content. The 24 text volumes comprise a total of 16,695 printed pages.

The IESBS can be accessed online for a fee. The foreword, the introduction, and overviews of the articles, topics and authors are - with abstracts - visible online free of charge. The journal "Contemporary Psychology" has described the IESBS as "the largest corpus of knowledge" "that exists in the social and behavioral sciences".

In 2015 Elsevier published a revised new edition of the encyclopedia, edited by James Wright.

organization

In addition to the two main editors Baltes and Smelser and the "Section Editors", who were each responsible for a content-related section, there was an "International Advisory Board" which, among other things, made contributions to the selection of the "Section Editors".

predecessor

Similar earlier encyclopedias of this type are the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences , edited in 15 volumes between 1930 and 1935 by ERA Seligman and A. Johnson, and the 17-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences , edited in 1968 by David L. Sills was published by Macmillan Verlag and a second edition was published in 2008. These encyclopedias have no direct organizational connection with the IESBS, but are independent companies.
