2020 Prize Winner: Taylor Mac

The International Ibsen Prize (Norwegian: Internasjonal Ibsenpris ) was founded in 2007 by the Norwegian government. It is intended to honor a personality, organization or institution in the artistic or cultural field that has achieved something important in the spirit of Henrik Ibsen’s work. The award, which has been presented annually since 2008 and biennially since 2010, is endowed with NOK 2.5 million (280,000 euros). It is sometimes referred to in the media as the “Nobel Prize in Theater”.

As a rule, the winner will be announced on March 20th, Henrik Ibsen's birthday; the award ceremony will take place during the International Ibsen Festival at the Nationaltheatret in Oslo. The first president of the jury was the actress Liv Ullmann . The awarding of the prize to Peter Handke in 2014 was accompanied by violent protests against him. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the award ceremony could only take place digitally.
