The interstiz ( Latin interstitium from inter (in German between ) and stare (in German to stand )) describes the time of the interruption of membership of religious in a religious community . It is a legal form that temporarily allows life outside the religious community. The legal relationship between the order member and the order remains in place, as long as the absence of the order community itself is not affected. The Interstiz can take place at the request of an order member or be a regular part of the training of religious.

In the Jesuit order , the term interstice means an interruption in studies. After two or three years of studying philosophy , this is followed by two years of practical work, followed by the study of theology . The Interstiz (also called Magisterium) is often done in the field of youth work, in works of the order or in social work, this can be done in the home province or in another province.

The corresponding English word interstice is also used to mean space or gap .
