The University of Iowa is a national research university whose 7.7 square kilometers large campus in Iowa City in the US state of Iowa is located. The university has about 30,000 students and is the largest college in Iowa. The university is one of 60 elected members in the prestigious Association of American Universities and is one of the best state universities known as Public Ivy .

The State University of Iowa was founded as Iowa's first higher education institution on February 25, 1847, just 59 days after Iowa became a state. Despite its original name, it is not to be confused with Iowa State University .

The first lectures were given in 1855. In September 1855 the university had 124 students, 41 of whom were women. It was the first state university in the USA that allowed men and women to have equal rights. At the same time, it was the first university in the world to recognize creative work in theater, writing, music and art on an equal footing with academic research.

She did important pioneering work in equality between women and African-Americans.

Sports

The University of Iowa is a member of the Big Ten Conference in college sports. Their sports teams are called Iowa Hawkeyes . The official school colors are black and gold.

After flooding caused by heavy rainfall in June and July 2008, the School of Music was moved to the city center and built in the area around the concert hall.

The new organ in the concert hall was completed in 2016 by the organ building company Klais (Bonn). The instrument, based on the example of the German-Romantic organ building tradition, has 57 registers , which are distributed over three manuals and pedal .
