Iskar Gorge

The Iskar Gorge ( Bulgarian Искърски пролом [ ɪskɤrski pɾoɫom ] or Искърскo дефиле [ ɪskɤrskɔ dəfɪʟə ]) is a 65 km long gorge in Bulgaria that the Iskar River formed when it crossed the Balkan Mountains . Geologically, the gorge was created through antecedent in the Old Tertiary . It represents one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Bulgaria. Along the river there are numerous rock formations and rock walls, the difference in height between the canyon floor and the surrounding mountain peaks is up to 1000 meters. The gorge is also an important transport link between southern and northern Bulgaria, along the river runs a country road and the double- track Sofia- Varna railway .
