Iveco Turbobrake

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Iveco Turbobrake is an engine brake that is used in Iveco heavy trucks. It differs from other systems in that it does not have an additional decompression valve or an exhaust flap.

The roller rocker arm of each exhaust valve is mounted eccentrically on the rocker arm shaft and can be moved electro-hydraulically by oil pressure so that the exhaust valve opens briefly at the end of the compression stroke. As a result, the compressed air is released into the exhaust and the work that the engine had to do to compress the air is largely not used to accelerate the piston again. At the same time, the guide vanes in the turbocharger's exhaust gas turbine are set in such a way that a high boost pressure results in order to further increase the braking performance.

Advantages of the turbo brake are the good efficiency with a relatively small space requirement (no additional valve in the cylinder), low noise development and gradability.
