St. Ivan Rilski

Iwan Rilski ( Bulgarian Иван Рилски , German equivalent: Saint John of the Rila Mountains , * 876 in Skrino , Bulgaria , † August 18, 946 in Rila Monastery , Bulgaria) was the first Bulgarian hermit and the founder of the largest Bulgarian monastery, the Rila Monastery . He is venerated as the patron saint of the Bulgarians and as the most important saint of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in other Orthodox churches.

Commemoration and Iconography

His feast day in the Orthodox Church is the day of his death, August 18th. Further memorial days apply to the discovery of the bones in the Rila monastery (October 19) and the transfer of the bones from Tirnovo to the Rila monastery in 1469 (July 1), which was recorded in writing by Wladislaw Gramatik .

The oldest icon of the saint dates from the 14th century. He is depicted as an old monk with a long, pointed beard and a staff in hand.

Today several churches, the Sofia Spiritual Academy and other public submissions in Bulgaria bear the name of Iwan Rilski. The St. Ivan Rilski Col is also named after him, a mountain ridge on Livingston Island in Antarctica.

The monk's father has been depicted on the 1 lev coin since 1999 .
