James Charles "JC" Heard (* 8. October 1917 in Dayton , Ohio ; † 27. September 1988 in Royal Oak , Michigan ) was an American jazz - drummer .

JC Heard was a very adaptable drummer who participated in countless swing , bop as well as rhythm and blues sessions and worked with musicians as diverse as Gene Ammons , Sidney Bechet , Wardell Gray , Charlie Parker , Ike Quebec , Sarah Vaughan , Ben Webster and Lester Young performed and recorded.

As a fourteen year old he played drums, first in local orchestras, later in the bands of Teddy Wilson (1939–41), Benny Carter (1941–42) and Cab Calloway (1942–45), in between for half a year in Benny Goodman's band . After 1946 he also led his own ensemble, with which he performed at the New York Cafe Society and recorded 78s for Continental , was a member of Erroll Garner's band , accompanied Lester Young on his album Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio in 1952 and toured with them in 1953 Jazz At The Philharmonic in Europe. In 1953 he settled temporarily in Japan, where he performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi , in the Philippines and in Australia . In 1958 he played with JATP at the Jazz Festival in Cannes and at the World Exhibition in Brussels. In the same year he played with Roy Eldridge , Coleman Hawkins , Lester Young (with the Oscar Peterson Quartet) and with his own bands. The best-known recordings on which JC Heard participated are " Congo Blues " and " Slam Slam Blues " by Red Norvo and His Selected Sextet (with Charlie Parker , Dizzy Gillespie , Teddy Wilson, Flip Phillips and Slam Stewart , June 6, 1945 ). With Charlie Parker he also played the track " The Street Beat " (with Sir Charles Thompson & His All Stars) on September 4, 1945 .

In 1966 JC Heard moved to Detroit , where he served as a band leader and mentor for young musicians until the mid-1980s. In the 1970s and 1980s he appeared in various All Star formations in Europe, and in 1983 also in Dizzy Gillespie's quartet .

JC Heard should not be confused with bassist John Heard .
