James H. Price

James Hubert Price (born September 7, 1878 in Greenbrier County , West Virginia , †  November 22, 1943 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American politician and from 1938 to 1942 governor of the state of Virginia.

Early years and political advancement

Price came to Staunton with his parents when he was a child . There he attended the Dunsmore Business College , at which he also taught as a teacher for some time. After studying law at Washington and Lee University and being admitted to the bar, Price began working in his new profession in Richmond.

Price joined the Democratic Party . He was elected to their board of directors in Virginia and was party chairman in that state for three years. During the First World War , he served as legal advisor to the Richmond City Defense Administration. He served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1916 to 1928 ; Between 1930 and 1938 he was Vice Governor Deputy Governors John Garland Pollard and George C. Peery .

Governor of Virginia

In 1938 he was elected governor of his state with the help of the influential US Senator Harry F. Byrd , where he prevailed with 82.8 percent of the vote against the Republican J. Powell Royall. Price took up his new office on January 18, 1938. During his four-year tenure, Virginia established the merit principle in public service. In addition, social security laws were first enacted at the state level in Virginia. These followed the pattern of the laws passed by the federal government as part of the New Deal program. The governor also campaigned for urban development in his state and supported the full integration of African Americans into the armed forces. The last weeks of his reign, which ended on January 21, 1942, were marked by the events of World War II , in which the United States had participated since December 7, 1941, the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor .

After his governorship ended, Price became president of the Central National Bank of Richmond and the Jefferson Reality Company . He was a senior member of the Masonic Movement in Virginia and the curator of a hospital for disabled children. James Price died in November 1943. He had two children with his wife, Lillian Martin.
