James Warren Nye

James Warren Nye (born June 10, 1815 in DeRuyter , Madison County , New York , † December 25, 1876 in White Plains , New York) was an American politician .

biography

Early life

After attending school, Nye graduated from Homer Academy in Homer , and graduated from a private school in Troy with a law degree . He then practiced in Madison County, whose district attorney he was in 1839. In 1840 Nyes was appointed district judge of the county, an office he held until 1848. As early as 1846, Nye ran for New York as a member of the Free Soil Party for a seat in the US House of Representatives , albeit unsuccessfully.

In 1857, Jim Nye was elected First President of the Metropolitan Board of Police of New York City and served until 1860.

Political career

In 1861, Nye was appointed Republican governor of the newly formed Nevada Territory by Abraham Lincoln , an office that involved a move. When Nevada became a US state three years later, in 1864, Nye was named one of the first two US senators . James Nye served from February 1, 1865 to March 3, 1873. During his tenure, Nye served on various committees. He was chairman of the Committee on Legislative Decisions from 1865 to 1867, from 1867 to 1869 a member of the Committee on Damage Settlement as a result of the Civil War and from 1869 to 1871 he was a member of the Committee on Territories.

Private

James Warren Nye married Elsie Ann Benson on February 21, 1839. With her he had two children, daughter Mary and son Charles. Three years after retiring from the Senate, James Warren Nye died at the age of 61.
