James W. Owens

James W. Owens (born October 26, 1838 in Franklin County , Indiana , †  March 30, 1900 in Newark , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Owens graduated from Miami University in Oxford (Ohio) in 1862 . At the beginning of the civil war he served in various units in the Union Army , in which he rose to captain. After a subsequent law degree in 1864 and 1864 at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his 1865 admission to the bar, he began to work in Newark in this profession. In 1867 and 1869 he was elected district attorney in Licking County there. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1875 to 1879 he was a member and president of the State Senate . Between 1878 and 1896 he also served as a board member of Miami University.

In the 1888 congressional election , Owens was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  electoral district of Ohio , where he succeeded Beriah Wilkins on March 4, 1889 . After re-election as the successor to Charles Preston Wickham in the 14th District, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 . From 1891 he was chairman of the Ministry of Interior's expenditure control committee. In 1892 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, James Owens practiced as a lawyer again. He died on March 30, 1900 in Newark, where he was also buried.
