Jan Holschuh

Jan Holschuh (born August 9, 1909 in Beerfelden , † August 2, 2000 in Michelstadt ) was a German ivory carver .

He was one of the most important contemporary artists in the field of ivory carving . In addition to large-scale sculptures, he made large-scale small sculptures from ivory , mammoth and amber, as well as jewelry. Many of his more than 200 ivory works are exhibited in the German Ivory Museum in Erbach .

After an ivory carving apprenticeship in Erbach, he continued his training in Königsberg and studied from 1931 to 1933 at the University of Fine Arts in Weimar. From 1934 he was artistic director of the amber manufacture in Königsberg ; he returned to Erbach in 1950.

He received numerous awards for his artistic work, such as the Grand Prix of the World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929 and the Munich State Prize in 1966. His work “Sermon on the Mount” from 1959 is considered one of the highlights of abstract ivory carving.
