Japanese Sums is a cross number puzzle. In contrast to the Kakuro , the black fields (empty fields) are not entered in the game board and must be opened up by the puzzle solver.

Japanese sums are played on a rectangular or square grid. At the beginning the grid is completely empty. On the left and at the top there are one or more numbers for each row and column. The grid must now be filled with digits and spaces so that the following conditions are met:

  • Each digit may only appear once per column and row (occasionally only digits that are smaller than a specified number).
  • The digits add up to the sums given in the margin (in the given order), different sums are separated by spaces.
  • A total can also consist of only one single digit.
