Jazenko I-28 ( Russian Яценко И-28 ) is a Soviet fighter aircraft of the late 1930s. It was created in the course of the modernization program of the Soviet air force in 1938. The abbreviation "I" stands for Istrebitel (Истребитель), the Russian word for fighter aircraft.
development
In accordance with the requirements, the designer Wladimir Jazenko tried to develop an aircraft that should be easy, quick and cheap to build. Jazenko's construction should consist of synthetic resin-soaked birch wood, which was known for its good formability and machinability. Semyon Lavochkin also chose this material for his rival LaGG-1 and LaGG-3 designs .
The aircraft was designed as a cantilever low wing . The wings were bent downwards near the fuselage so that the retractable main landing gear mounted there could be extremely short. The pilot's cabin was moved far back. An M-87 engine with 940 hp served as the drive.
The first flight of the I-28 took place on April 30, 1939. When tested, it reached a speed of 545 km / h at an altitude of 6,000 meters. Some time later, the plane crashed during testing. Nevertheless, an order for 30 machines was placed and another prototype was built, this time with a 1100 hp M-87B engine. Testing began in August 1939, with a top speed of 576 km / h. In the end, however, only five series models were produced because of the problem-free engine. Other types that were rated as better were already being tested. See MiG-1 , MiG-3 and Jak-1 .
Jakowlew developed the high altitude fighter I-28 (Jak-5) about two years later . It has nothing in common with Jazenko's I-28.
