Jeremiah S. Black

Jeremiah Sullivan Black (born January 10, 1810 in Stony Creek , Pennsylvania , † August 19, 1883 in Brockie , Pennsylvania) was an American lawyer and politician .

Black was one of the leading lawyers in the United States. From 1851 to 1857 he was a member of the Supreme Court (Supreme Court) of Pennsylvania and its head. When President James Buchanan took office , he was a United States Attorney General in his cabinet . He became Secretary of State on December 17, 1860, succeeding Lewis Cass . He remained in this office until March 5, 1861, when he was succeeded by William H. Seward .

President Buchanan proposed him for a seat on the United States Supreme Court , but the Senate rejected him. He was the son of Congressman Henry Black (1783-1841) and father of Chauncey Forward Black (1839-1904), who was Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania between 1883 and 1887 .
