Johannes H. Voigt

Johannes Hermann Voigt (born October 13, 1929 in Groß Wittensee ; † February 28, 2020 in Marbach am Neckar ) was a German modern historian and emeritus professor for overseas history at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

From 1950 Voigt studied law, history and English at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the University of London . In 1959, he was a doctoral thesis to the British policy in the Schleswig-Holstein question (1859 to 1864) to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1959 to 1961 he was a lecturer at Benares Hindu University in Varanasi and from 1961 to 1962 at Panjab University in Chandigarh in India. He then conducted research at St Antony's College at the University of Oxford on the development of Indian historiography in the age of nationalism, where he obtained a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). From 1968 to 1971 he worked as a research fellow in Indian history at the Australian National University in Canberra .

Voigt completed his habilitation in 1973 at the University of Stuttgart with a thesis on India during World War II . He became a university lecturer at the University of Stuttgart in 1973 and an adjunct professor in 1977 . From 1979 until his retirement in 1995 he was full professor and head of the then established Department of Overseas History. His main research interests were the recent history of India and German-Australian relations. He was married to Ingrid Voigt and had two daughters and a son, the historian Sebastian Voigt .
