The Johannishus was a Swedish oil tanker . Loaded with several thousand tons of crude oil, the ship, measured at 10,788 GRT, collided on June 9, 1955 25 nautical miles off the Goodwin Sands with the somewhat smaller Panamanian tanker Bucanneer, which was also loaded with oil, and burned out. About twenty crew members were killed.

details

The Johannishus was hit on the port side of the fore ship during the accident. The leaking oil ignited and set both ships on fire, but the fire on the Bucanneer was extinguished after about two hours. The Bucanneer could call at the next port on her own. Of the 43-man crew of the tanker, 21 men and one woman were initially rescued by other ships. A crew member recovered died shortly afterwards on land. Around seven hours after the collision, the lifeboat that had remained on site reported to Ramsgate station that there was no longer any possibility for further survivors.
