John A. Notte

John Anthony Notte Jr. (born May 3, 1909 in Providence , Rhode Island , † March 7, 1983 in Pawtucket , Rhode Island) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1961 to 1963 .

Early years and political advancement

John Notte attended Providence College until 1931 and then Cornell University until 1932 . After a subsequent law degree at Boston University , he was admitted to the bar in 1935. He then began working in this profession in Providence. In 1937 he represented this city legally. During the Second World War he served in the US Navy . After the war he became chairman of the committee that decided on bonus payments to war veterans.

Notte became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1948 and 1956 he worked on the staff of Theodore F. Green , who then represented the state of Rhode Island in the US Senate . After being elected Secretary of State , he resigned from the Senator's advisory board. He then carried out his new job until 1958. That year he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. So he was between 1959 and 1961 deputy to Governor Christopher Del Sesto , against whom he ran in 1960 in the gubernatorial election.

Governor of Rhode Island

After Notte had won the gubernatorial elections, he was able to exercise his new office between January 3, 1961 and January 1, 1963. A family court was established in Rhode Island during his tenure. Notte was originally in favor of introducing an income tax, but withdrew his approval. He allowed nightly horse racing in Rhode Island. These two points angered the unions, which withdrew their support in 1962. As a result, he was defeated in the gubernatorial election against John Chafee , the candidate of the Republican Party .

After the end of his governorship, Notte returned to practice as a lawyer. In 1967 a planned candidacy for the US House of Representatives failed in his party's primary elections. John Notte died in March 1983. He had two children with his wife Marie J. Huerth.
