John C. Burch

John Chilton Burch (born February 1, 1826 in Boone County , Missouri , †  August 31, 1885 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Burch attended public schools in his home country. After studying law in Jefferson City and being admitted to the bar, he began working in the profession. Burch was also employed by the Cole County Administration as Deputy Clerk at the time . He was also an Assistant Adjutant General on the Missouri National Guard Command Center. During the gold rush , Burch moved to California in 1950, where he worked in the mines until 1851. Then he was district administrator in the newly created Trinity County . In 1853 he became a district attorney. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1856 he was a member of the California State Assembly ; from 1857 to 1859 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1858 Burch was elected for the first seat of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Joseph C. McKibbin on March 4, 1859 . Until March 3, 1861 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Burch worked as a lawyer in San Francisco. For four years he was a member of his state's Code Commissioner . He turned down an appointment as a judge at the Supreme Court of California . Between 1879 and 1881 he was employed as Secretary of the Senate in the administration of the US Senate . John Burch died in San Francisco on August 31, 1885.
