John H. Hager

John Henry Hager (born August 28, 1936 in Durham , North Carolina , † August 23, 2020 ) was an American politician . Between 1998 and 2002 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia .

Career

John Hager studied until 1958 at the Purdue University , the mechanical engineering ( Mechanical Engineering ). He then attended Harvard Business School until 1960 . He then served as a captain in the United States Army , whose reserve he was also later a member. Between 1961 and 1994 he worked for the American Tobacco Company . There he rose in the course of time to the executive vice president. At the same time he became a member of numerous organizations and associations.

Politically, Hager joined the Republican Party . In 1997 he was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside Jim Gilmore . He held this office between 1998 and 2002. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He was also a member and chairman of various commissions. In 2001 he ran unsuccessfully in his party's gubernatorial primaries. Between 2001 and 2004 he was Director of Homeland Security for Virginia . He then worked from 2004 to 2007 as a division manager in the United States Department of Education . He was the Republican President for Virginia in 2007 and 2008.
